Horizon Church December Bible Reading Plan - Christmas Advent: Jesus, ComeÀpẹrẹ
Blessing for All People, Come
Abraham’s story foreshadows the gospel long before Christ's birth. Faced with Sarah’s barrenness, Abraham and Sarah saw no future, yet God made an extraordinary promise to them—a son, and, more than that, a legacy of countless descendants and nations. God’s promise to Abraham was a permanent covenant: “I will make you the father of many nations… a permanent covenant to be your God and the God of your offspring” (Genesis 17:5, 7).
Abraham trusted this promise, and his faith became the foundation of God’s unfolding blessing. Isaac’s birth was the beginning of God’s promise to bless all nations—a blessing ultimately fulfilled in Jesus, the true-and-better Isaac, who offers redemption to all who believe. As Paul writes in Galatians, faith like Abraham’s makes anyone—Jew or Gentile—a child of God.
Abraham’s story reveals the gospel: a hope not based on our own abilities but on God’s faithfulness. This is the message of Christmas—the incarnate Christ who fulfils God’s promises and invites all people into the blessing of salvation. Let us look to Abraham’s faith as we, too, await the return of Jesus, our promised Saviour and eternal hope.
