HUMANITY AND HUMILITY

Because Jesus was with God and is the very Son of God, it may seem strange that one of His names is 'The Son of Man.' The Son of God speaks of Jesus' Deity. The Son of Man occurs 88 times in the New Testament, and the prophet Ezekiel referred to the Son of Man 93 times. The Son of Man reveals the human side of Christ. He came to earth in the flesh and walked as a man for 33 years. It also speaks of His humility. To think that he lowered himself to walk among men even though He was Deity speaks volumes about humility. It was here that man rejected Him and ultimately put Him to death.

"For the 'Son of man' is come to save that which was lost." Matthew 18:11

People in Bible days had a hard time accepting Jesus as the Messiah because He was known in the area to be the 'Son of Mary.' They knew Jesus as a carpenter, and they knew His siblings, so they couldn't wrap their minds around Him being incarnate. Yet it was Jesus who said, "whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother." Matthew 12:50

"Is not this the carpenter, the 'son of Mary,' the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him." Mark 6:3

LET US PAUSE:

It is hard to separate the thoughts of Jesus being both deity and human, yet He was both! As we pause today and think about what Jesus went through on earth as man, it makes it easier for us to know that He relates to the things we go through. We never should lose sight of His Sovereignty, and never forget that He lowered Himself from deity to walk among us to shed light on a sin-sick world. Today, light a candle honoring these two names!
