Run The Risk
Historically, when the story of Jesus encountering the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well is discussed, the conversation centers on the amazing grace that is exemplified. And rightfully so. Without question, this story is one of the purest portrayals of grace in action but there is something deeper.
This story is also a great example of what it means to take a risk for the sake of making an impact. When Jesus decided to engage this woman, who was notorious for her adulterous ways, it was a costly decision on his part. Some have even labeled it as a risky and reckless thing for him to have done, especially because it defied societal norms and traditions. None of that mattered to Jesus, though.
Onlookers saw a woman bound by promiscuity; Jesus saw a soul with a promise. And that is why he was willing to run the risk of ruining his reputation, being doubted, and so on. Jesus was fully confident that by offering her a drink from a well that would never run dry, she would experience a new beginning that would rewrite her story.
As we see from this story, a risk taken can mean a life saved. A risk taken can mean a life changed. Here is a simple question for you to reflect on today: Are you willing to run a risk for the sake of making an impact? Jesus did. You should, too.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, equip me with a yearning to see souls saved and lives changed. Help me to see people how you see them and not through a religious or societal lens. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
