Reading the Bible in Historical Sequence Part 5

ARAW 30 NG 31

Solomon ignores his own writings against adultery, falls for many foreign women and starts honoring their gods. God angrily promises to tear all but one tribe from the kingdom. A psalmist urges Israel to forsake idols, which can’t speak, hear or see.

Note 1 Kings 11: Solomon finally had 700 wives and 300 concubines (1 Kings 11:3). In taking so many wives Solomon ignored the Lord’s commandment of Deuteronomy 17:17: ‘He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray.’ He did some disgusting things (1 Kings 11:5–8). The ‘one tribe’ of 1 Kings 11:13 is Judah. It also included Benjamin but by this time the latter was gradually losing its separate identity.
