Day 8: The Defining Mark of a Disciple

“By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35).

Theme

In a gut-wrenching arrest scene, Jake demonstrates with profound clarity what should be the defining mark of a true disciple of Jesus Christ. Despite intense persecution and the threat of suffering, Jake remains unwavering in his allegiance to Christ and his fellow believers. His willingness to sacrifice his own life follows Jesus’ radical call to His followers:

“For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it” (Matthew 16:25).

This scene captures the essence of discipleship—a life poured out for God’s truth and the love of one’s fellow believers.

In Jake’s final scene, when he is finally captured by Agent Lawson and just before he is killed, he declares with resolve: “For all the things I am not ... I am that [a disciple of Jesus Christ].”

Reflection

  • Based on Jesus’ words, what is the defining mark of an authentic disciple? Does your life reflect Christlike love for other believers?
  • The characters in the film clearly grasped that following Jesus is not simply saying words or even believing; rather, it requires a wholehearted devotion and obedience, no matter the cost. Do you think this is how Christians should be defined? Why or why not?
  • What are some areas in which you tend to hold back from surrendering as a disciple?
