Day 4: Hope in the Midst of Suffering
And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope (Romans 5:3–4).
Theme
The dangerous risks faced by Nate’s team could be compared to Jesus’ time of testing in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1–11; Luke 4:1–13). Wilderness seasons are an excruciating but necessary preparation that leads to greater impact. A mentor counsels Nate, telling him that perseverance is a difficult path, but it’s necessary. Nate and his team plan to deliver the pure, uncorrupted Word of God to those who are spiritually starved. Just as Jesus endured the wilderness before beginning his world-changing ministry, so too must Nate’s team sacrificially stay with the task, even through difficult trials.
Despite their dire circumstances, Jake, Ashley, Cody, and Jim show that with God’s help, they can persevere because of their hope in Christ.
