Today Is Going to Be Another Good DayНамуна
Today is going to be a good day because when the news, doctors, or diagnoses prompt fear because of the predictions they lend about the number of our days, we can close our ears to them and choose to remember that only God knows the number of our days, and He promises long life and salvation. But God’s timetable is often different than ours.
As a young girl, my world was shaken when my father suffered a massive heart attack at the age of forty. He immediately quit smoking, assumed a heart-healthy diet, and began a daily exercise regime that he never missed, even on holidays. He took that wake-up call seriously and followed the doctor’s prescription down to every detail.
Two years later, at a routine cardiac checkup, the cardiologist examined him, looked at his patient chart and recent laboratory results, and encouraged him by declaring, “At this rate, you’ll live to be 90 years old!” That was the kind of news that encouraged our hearts and offered peace to our minds. Unfortunately for us, my father died two days later from a second, although this time fatal, heart attack. The great physician determined his days, not his cardiologist.
My heartfelt like it shattered into a billion tiny irreparable pieces that day. How would I make it through life without my father? Without his humor, his wit and wisdom, and his spiritual mentoring? He wouldn’t see me graduate, get married, or become a doctor or a mother.
It didn’t seem fair. He worked hard for God’s kingdom, starting churches, leading Sunday school, comforting the widows, and evangelizing to those who didn’t know his Savior. Surely his life was important for not only his family but also for God’s kingdom.
And yet, over the years, I came to realize God numbers each of our days, and we won’t leave this earth a minute too soon to complete the tasks God has specifically assigned for us to do. Nothing and no one can change his timetable. We may not understand why some graduate to glory sooner than others, but we can take comfort knowing God’s timing is perfect. He’s always an “on-time God.”
If I didn’t know Jesus as my Savior, I would despair at the state of this world and not want to continue in this life but knowing him gives me promise of better days to come, and his strength in the wait.
Father, thank you that when we cannot understand your ways we can trust that they are always for our good. Thank you for keeping track of all of our days, and giving us a purpose and a plan for each day we wake. Help us to appreciate each day and to live it to the fullest for your glory. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
