DAY 7 OF 12

King Eternal

The Scriptures commence with an account of the origin of all things. The earth, sky, and everything that we have come to see as the building blocks for the world in which we live find their origin at the beginning of time, being directed by one entity: God. We see this Creator causing all things to come into being as He speaks them into existence. This is the God we serve. He created and, therefore, transcends our time and space.

Consider an acclaimed potter who creates beautiful ornaments from clay. We would rightfully declare him to be the creator of the art. And the principle extends beyond the analogy. Wrap your head around the God who created both the proverbial potter and his clay. God is the creator of this potter, every other potter, and all things. He is the true Potter. God’s power is thus so clearly displayed in creation, which is His handiwork.

At the centre of creation, we find humanity. God created us in His image. No other creature has been given this status and vocation. This means that we have been given the unique task of representing God here on earth. God chose to partner with us to steward His beautiful creation. As His image-bearers, we were also made to share in the glory of His Son, Jesus Christ (see Romans 8:17). All of this means that we have a genuine purpose here on earth. God has given each one of us a unique purpose and vocation. You are not an accident. Your life has meaning simply because you are a human being. Now, many of us struggle with the question of meaning and purpose. Does my life have any value? Do the things I do now have any eternal significance? We can only receive the answers to these questions from our Maker. God is the Potter, and we are the clay.

Whatever we do (our career, our family life, our skills and abilities, our passions in life, etc.) has a God-given purpose. But we must receive our unique vocation and purpose from God. We need Him to show us how our lives make a difference for His Kingdom. Spend a few minutes in prayer and ask God to reveal His purpose for you. Be specific. For example, ask God to show you how you can glorify Him in the work you do (whether it is a job, studying, raising children, etc.). Ask Him to show you where you might need to change some habits that are not aligned with His purpose for you. Also, allow the Holy Spirit to help you see how your life fits into the bigger picture of God’s story of redemption and renewal of creation. You are God’s handiwork, and therefore, you matter!
