Daily Bible Reading — Sustained By God’s Word Of FaithChikamu
May 13
Introduction
Yesterday’s reading concluded with Gideon building an altar to the LORD and tearing down the altar to Baal (the Canaanite god) along with the symbol of the fertility goddess Asherah. Baal was worshiped at this time by Gideon’s family and by other people in the town. When the people discover what Gideon had done, they want to kill him. Gideon mobilizes the Israelites but once again seeks proof from God that he has been chosen to rescue Israel.
Today’s Scripture: Judges 6:34a
The spirit of the LORD took control of Gideon.
Today’s Reading
Judges 6:28-40
Reflect
What did Joash, Gideon’s father, say in defense of his son (verse 31)? By what new name was Gideon known, and what does it mean (verse 32)? In what two ways did Gideon seek to test God (verses 36-40)? Why do you think he needed this proof? What are your thoughts about his asking this of God? Have you ever asked for a sign from God before proceeding with a task?
Pray
Almighty God, forgive me when I have doubts about what you have called me to do. Strengthen me and empower me with your Spirit to do your will and to place my confidence in you. Amen.
Prayer Concern
Those fearful of trying something new
Tomorrow’s Reading
Judges 7:1-25: Gideon defeats the Midianites.
