True Friendship

In a world filled with changing trends and cultural references, one thing remains constant: the importance of friendship. We’ve witnessed it portrayed in popular shows like “Seinfeld,” “Friends,” and “Outer Banks,” and we’ve experienced it in our own lives. Our scripture passage, Romans 16:16, implores us to exhibit kind affection. Godly people warmly greet others, showing care and affection to other believers. For men, this is not always championed, but it doesn’t mean it’s not what God intended. God knows what we need even if culture may not agree.

Because in our culture today, expressing affection through our words, touch, and hearts can be challenging, particularly for men. However, kindness and affection are godly. In the US, men are often not encouraged to show such virtues. I remember a time at church, that my grandmother was moved by witnessing men embracing one another in love. It captured the essence of the body of Christ, a community that cares deeply for one another.

The person who wrote these words was Paul, who shouldered immense responsibilities for the churches. He demonstrated that godliness extends beyond affection; it also entails responsible leadership. In 2 Corinthians 11:25-28, he recounts the perils he faced in ministry. Sometimes, our burdens can feel overwhelming—whether they are related to our career, education, family, or singlehood. Yet, Jesus invites us to surrender our burdens to Him, assuring us that His yoke is easy and His burden is light.

Just as Paul felt the daily pressure of his concern for the churches, we, too, experience the weight of our responsibilities. However, by trusting Jesus, we can walk in him as godly men and women. Our true reward lies in hearing Jesus say, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” Jesus’ approval surpasses all worldly recognition.

Regardless of our societal roles, we all have a vital role. We aim to walk with God, faithfully serving our families and bravely pursuing our endeavors. Let us be friends who exemplify affection and leadership, lionhearted yet embodying a lamb’s gentle and kind nature, just like Jesus.

We must remember the timeless values that define us in a constantly changing world. Let us embrace friendship, show affection, and extend leadership to those around us. Though the allure of worldly recognition may captivate us, its value is fleeting. Instead, our focus should be walking with God, seeking His approval and living out His purpose. As we strive to be godly men and women, our influence can transform our culture and leave an eternal impact.
