JOSHUA 10-11:
In yesterday’s reading in Joshua, it is good to notice that the king of Ai trusted in appearances, and was defeated. And the leaders of Israel trusted in appearances and failed to ask God for guidance, leading to a problem that would later cause more pain.

PSALM 71:
Today we read Psalm 71. This is a poem written by a senior citizen which includes examples for our prayers that are appropriate for ‘youth’ of all ages.

ACTS 22:
In the last part of Acts 21, people from Asia recognized Paul and started a riot in the temple. Paul was arrested and in today’s chapter gives his speech to the angry mob.

In several places in Luke’s writings irony is unmarked, but would have been understood by readers of his day. In the situation of arresting Paul and with a crowd around, I don’t think the Roman commander would have been in the mood to share about his own citizenship. So the commander had a sneer in his voice when he said, “I became one by paying a large amount of money.” Translating that sneer as irony, this verse could be translated, 

The commander scoffed, “Oh yeah, I’ve heard that one before! Now you’re gonna say, ‘It cost me plenty to buy my citizenship.’”

Let’s pray.
Our Father, how we thank You that You really are always with us— especially in those times when it seems to us that You have left us. We say with David, “I am weak and poor, O Lord, but you have not forgotten me. You are my savior and my God— hurry to my aid!” Father, we thank You for all the troubles that Paul endured. You told him right from his vision on the road to Damascus that he would suffer much. But You knew that his experiences would be an encouragement to millions of believers that would come after him. So today we rejoice in our King Jesus and say, “May all who come to You be glad and joyful. May all who are thankful for your salvation alway say, “How great is the Lord!”
