DAY 21 OF 86

DEUTERONOMY 19-20:
In yesterday’s reading in Deuteronomy, we heard that the duties of the king included having a copy of the Law made, or perhaps making it himself (the Hebrew is unclear on that point). This is something we never hear of happening. (I don’t think what was given to King Josiah at his inauguration qualifies.) Then Deuteronomy 18 is a very important chapter because of its prohibition against all kinds of witchcraft and fortune telling. Then there is one of the most important prophecies regarding Jesus: God was going to send a prophet like Moses and the people must listen to him. Another key point about this prophecy is the specific requirement that the prophet would come from the people of Israel.

PSALM 59:
Today’s psalm, chapter 59, again comes from David’s experiences. Because of his unique situation, he certainly learned how to pray for protection from enemies.

ACTS 13b:
In the first part of Acts  chapter 13, we heard how God called Barnabas and Saul in the city of Antioch— the one in the Roman province of Syria, and the church sent them out. We repeat some verses from Paul’s important speech, which took place in the other city called Antioch, the one in the province of Pisidia.

Let’s pray.
O Lord, our God, how amazing is your Word! Moses knew that one day the people of Israel would ask for a king. And just like we heard recently in Acts, that happened when the people of Israel asked Samuel to anoint a king. Moses gave the command that each king must have a copy of the book of the Law and read from it “all his life.” That and the other instructions for kings were not followed. And so in today’s Psalm, we will hear David lament about his unfair treatment at the hand of King Saul. Oh, Lord, if only you would cause our current leaders to read your Word daily! Then Moses forbid the people to follow magicians and all kinds of divination and consulting the spirits of the dead. And that’s the sort of man that Elymas was, and we saw what happened when an apostle met such a man. Lord Jesus, You are the one Prophet Moses prophesied would come— the one that all the people must listen to. We pray that you would remove the dark mist or scales that are on the eyes of the people we care for and pray for, who need to come to you.
