The Lord Will Provide

It can be very easy to worry about our future, what we will wear, or eat, or do. But Jesus, being the perfect Son, best friend, and wise teacher, knew we would struggle with this.

In Matthew 6, Jesus tells us “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.” (v. 25-26, 28)

Jesus knew that our minds might get stuck in worrying about the future, but He promises us that He will always provide for us. Not just physical things like clothes or shoes or food, either! He will also provide for our hearts. He gives us peace, confidence, hope, grace, patience… in every circumstance, in every season, Jesus provides.

Jesus encourages us to look at the flowers and the birds when we feel worried. Do you ever see a bird’s nest, with its sticks and feathers? Birds do not worry or stress about where it will come from - they are God’s creation! Next time when you see a beautiful flower or tree, remember that God makes them grow and provides all they need - the sunshine, the rain, the soil. How much more will be provided to you!

We can trust that God will provide everything we need because He has already demonstrated it! He provided a way for us to be a part of His family forever by giving us His Son, who gave His life on the cross and was raised from the dead 3 days later - so that we too may also live.

When we feel worried or afraid, we can remember all that God has done and focus on Him first: “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33
