God is With Us

One day I found myself repeating some Bible verses over and over. My mom had been taken to the E.R. Because of some mysterious pain in her chest, they quickly decided to transfer her to a larger hospital. Panicked, I prayed we wouldn’t lose her in transit.

God reached down into my car and gave me peace through Isaiah 43:1-3,

But now, O Jacob, listen to the Lord who created you. O Israel, the one who formed you says, “Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.”

Upon further testing, the doctors found a blood clot in her lungs. She could have easily passed away if the medical team had not acted quickly. I was so grateful God brought to mind an Old Testament prophecy just in time to give me His peace and reassurance.

He affirmed my relationship with Him by calling me by my given name. I know that He was caring for me and for my mom. These verses use real-life circumstances with the “waters” and “rivers” symbolizing difficulties and crises.

My emotions felt like they were in crisis. The “fire” represents intense trials or suffering. God promised that despite our health challenges, He would be with me in them. I wasn’t to be overwhelmed or destroyed. Just as He was there for the Israelites, this verse served as a powerful reminder of divine protection and support.

I once thought that Old Testament promises were for the Israelites only. God sounded angry and distant, so far away from where I was. Then He prompted me to read with a gentler tone and my opinion of God changed dramatically. He is a God of mercy and grace.

Now these verses are some of my favorites when I read them in a personalized way. In summary, these verses from Isaiah 43 offer reassurance of God’s unwavering presence and protection in times of trouble.

They underscore the personal relationship between God and man, as well as His readiness to intervene on our behalf to ensure His care, safety, and ownership. God promises that, despite adversities, He will be with us, ensuring that we will not be overwhelmed or destroyed.
