Flip the Flow - Finding Truth in God's Word

DAY 4 OF 5

Trust Like No Other

My husband has endured seventeen surgeries scattered throughout our 44 years together. One of his earlier surgeries was on April 19, 1995, the same day as the deadliest act of domestic terrorism in U.S. history. This bombing killed 168 people (19 of whom were children), injured 680, and destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. (www.wikipedia.org)

I was glued to the hospital T.V. watching the devastation, the search for bodies, and the rescue efforts. I was thankful my husband made it through his cancer surgery, but everything seemed chaotic, both inside and outside the hospital.

I turned my attention to the chaplain, who had politely entered our hospital room. He made the analogy of trusting God in the uncertainties of life, especially when it felt as if everything was imploding. It was a timely message because my husband’s surgery left us both feeling out of control.

He spoke this comforting verse:

Proverbs 3:5-6, Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

God gave me my “life verse” as my guiding light and my anchor. I realized I had trusted God but only to the extent of what I could control. To trust in the Lord with all our heart, we must wholly rely upon His promises, wisdom, power, and love to help us, especially when life spins out of control.

Our human understanding is limited, but God sees and understands all. Because our understanding is tainted by sin, limited wisdom, and faulty emotions, we must put all our trust in God who never changes! Our knowledge is partial and incomplete.

We can’t see the whole picture, but God can! Therefore, we should base our understanding on who God is and His loving plans for each of us. After all, He is all-knowing, all-powerful, all-wise, and always loving.

God is worthy of our trust, even in life’s uncertainties. Salvation is the beginning of our trust journey with God, and we must wholeheartedly depend on and trust in Him instead of our own limited thinking or opinions.

We know God by spending time and talking with Him. The more we know God, the more we will love Him. The more we love Him, the more we will trust in Him alone—with all our hearts—for wisdom, for decisions, for everything.

What are these verses saying to you?
