Topic: Community
What does it say?
Amid a culture in which it is normal to give up gathering, the writer of Hebrews encourages believers to continue to meet with Christ-centered community.
What does it mean?
Community is important. It is through meeting with other Christ-followers that we are encouraged to love God and love people better. This passage emphasizes the value community has in the Christ-follower’s life. Christian community provides family, love, encouragement, and accountability. When we prioritize meeting with this community, we not only are provided with this kind of support, but we also serve others by providing it to them. As this passage suggests, support from community is helpful because it is hopeful.
How should I respond?
Christian community comes in all shapes and sizes. Worshiping alongside your local church congregation on a Sunday morning, studying God’s word with your life group, and praying with your friend are all ways to engage in Christian community. Just as Jesus ministered to the crowds but also invested in the lives of His disciples, Christian community includes both the breadth of corporate worship and the depth of personal relationships. Take time to evaluate your current level of involvement in Christian community. Think through a few ways you can deepen and prioritize your engagement with the people of God in both large and small settings.
