Ultimate trust
Today, we are looking to the cross for the last time this week. Luke tells us of Jesus' last words. He speaks them just before He dies: "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!" The deepest trust I can imagine is expressed through these words. Jesus had every reason to turn away. But His trust in God was so strong that He put His life into the hands of His Father. Actually, there were enough reasons to throw away the trust: the feeling of loneliness reported by Matthew and Mark ("Why have you forsaken me?") and also the fact that Jesus now felt in His body that His dying was a certainty was not helpful. Despite everything, He had an unshakable faith in His Father in heaven. This trust was so strong that it carried Him even beyond death. It was rewarded when He was then raised on the third day after His death. Such trust sustains us in the most difficult situations and can give us strength. But when it comes down to it, it is not so easy to trust like that.
Jesus could trust the Father because He understood and believed the truth about the Father. I now pick out three aspects from this truth. They can help to strengthen our trust in God or to find it anew.
First: God knows everything, and His ways are better than ours.
Second: With God, everything is possible.
Third: God is faithful and reliable.
ACTION STEP
What about your trust in God? Take some time and tell God in a prayer for what you would like to trust Him more.
