Strengthening Disciples
Acts 18:23
“After spending time in Antioch [home church], Paul set out from there and traveled from place to place throughout the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.”
Paul’s purpose in traveling from place to place following his initial evangelism-focused mission trips was for the strengthening and establishment of the disciples. These relatively young disciples knew enough about Jesus and his power over unclean spirits and his forgiveness of sin to give him their lives. However, they need to grow in strength.
How do we grow strong in the Lord?
Paul’s deep understanding of scripture, and his reliance on the power of the Holy Spirit, offered resources that the churches needed. New disciples need to be strengthened in faith, hope and love. The new disciples in Galatia were being swayed by the teachings of the Judaizers who were trying to bring these disciples under the law of Moses, rather than the grace and the power of the Holy Spirit. Paul’s focus on people and their unique needs guided his travel and ministry focus.
Lord Jesus, I pray that you would use me this day to encourage and strengthen others in their faith, hope and love, for your glory.
