Bible Reflections From Scripture Union Volume One

DAY 32 OF 181

Overview of Mark 5–7

Jesus told him (Thomas), “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed” (John 20:29)

The question that lingers in the minds of many people these days is whether God really cares for people. Many things have happened in Asia that have caused great anguish. Many others suffer in silence as they struggle to cope with the cares and woes of life.

These readings show us how Jesus meets the needs of people. He works miracles and demonstrates great power. The narrative style is fast paced. What stands out in these readings is Jesus’ dealings with the individual person. His personal encounters with people bring great encouragement and hope to us.

As you read, look out for the varied responses of people who encountered Jesus. Some were positive, some stubbornly negative. Some sought healing, some rejected Jesus, thus losing the opportunity to experience Jesus’ powers. The highlight of each encounter was the recognition that Jesus was more than just a man.

Our needs today are the same as the needs of the people during the time of Jesus. We are in need of healing, leadership and hope. Jesus continues to meet these needs and to give hope to those who will place their trust in Him. The words of Jesus to Thomas (John 20:29) motivate us to believe and to renew out trust in the One who loves us and cares for us.

Silent Desperation
Read Mark 5:1-20

As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon possessed begged to go with him. Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” Mark 5:18-19

There are many angry people living in the cities of Asia. Their anger and impatience come through in the way they drive. They may behave decently at other times but are transformed into angry people when they are behind the wheel. What could be the reason for this strange and troubling behaviour?

The man in Geneseret was demon possessed. He had lost the ability to control his actions. This was a spiritual problem but the people in his area used physical methods to control him (vs 3-4) and these proved futile.

We may have used anger management to solve our problem with anger but it seems to bring little effect. What then are we to do?

Jesus is unique as He identified the actual cause of the man’s misery and He healed him. He was very direct and effective because He is God. The demons knew it (v 7) and we believe it. Therefore, it would be most appropriate for us to bring our problems be they anger or fear or whatever they may be to Him as He knows what the root of the problem is. He can deliver us.

Yet many people are afraid of coming to Him as this would mean being exposed to Him, as nothing is hidden from Him. All our shame and weaknesses are laid open before Him. The people of that town did not want Him to be around (vs 15-17) because they were afraid. What a waste. For the healed man, his healing brought him freedom. Do not let the fear of embarrassment hinder you from being healed and delivered.

Only the Lord Jesus can fully deliver and heal us.

Why are we sometimes afraid to be open to Jesus
