Better Together: Connecting With God And Each Other

DAY 9 OF 15

Ain't Nobody Got Time For That

We live in a very busy culture where, in order to be efficient with our time and resources, we often have to ask, “What’s in it for me?” before we can say yes to helping someone or doing anything that will take any of our precious time. We have to be able to discern whether or not it is worth our time to help someone.

This attitude can really limit our connection with others, and is contrary to what we read in both of these passages. We are called to be servants to one another, and to support those who are weak when we are strong. As Paul writes, "Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up. For even Christ did not please himself."

Whenever we find ourselves believing that we are too important to help someone, or that we don't have the time necessary to support each other, we need to take time to reassess who we are seeking to please - ourselves or others? For Christ did not come to be served, but to serve, and we have the same calling.

Reflections:

  • What is the motivation or goal that drives us? Who are we seeking to serve?
  • What prevents us from taking up an attitude of willingness when others ask for our help?
  • Is it our responsibility to help or come alongside those who are struggling?
