Better Together: Connecting With God And Each Other

DAY 15 OF 15

Insecure Pride

Pride is a funny thing. In fact, most social workers would say that pride is actually a response to strong insecurity. When we are insecure about our gifts, talents, or abilities, we tend to put up a false strong front that rears its ugly head as pride.

Sometimes our pride through insecurity causes us not to let anyone into the ministry. We shy away from recruiting volunteers because we don’t know what we would ever have them do, we tend to not think about collaborating, maybe because we feel like we have very little to offer. We push everyone away, so that no one can see the challenges and weaknesses.

Scripture is clear that a prideful heart challenges the power of the Holy Spirit working in and through us. Humbleness is key to being strongly connected to the actively working Spirit. In ministry, we need to create an environment where honesty and vulnerability are welcomed.

Sometimes we just have to be ok with saying we don’t have it all figured out.

When we are humble we see our flat sides, we see where we need help. In these moments we allow others in and collaboration accelerates. When we admit we need assistance, we can better identify who we may connect well with. We aren’t called to do this alone.

"Insecure pride comes from trying to form my identity and calling in myself and by myself. Humble confidence comes from forming my identity and calling outside of myself in Christ " - Joel Mayword

Reflections:

  • Are you living with insecurity in ministry?
  • What are some things you feel like you don't have figured out? Take time to pray for humility in these areas. How can you ask others for help in these areas?
