Just Say The Word: Pray With Your WifeSample
Loving your wife as Jesus loves the Church
Can you remember the day your bride walked down the aisle? Undoubtedly your deep love for her captured your whole being. Jesus Christ also loves His Bride, the church. Ephesians 5:25 - 28 reveals amazing things regarding the scope and intention of Jesus’ great love for His bride the church:
- His Motivation—He loved the church.
- His Sacrifice—He gave himself up for her.
- His Purpose—To sanctify and cleanse her.
- His Method—By the washing of water with the Word.
- His Goal—that He might present her to Himself in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she should be holy and blameless.
The apostle Paul uses Jesus’ great love and sacrifice for His bride, the church, to illustrate the standard of how we are to love our wives. Wow! Have you ever wondered, “How can I love my wife like that?”
Your resolve toward leading your wife in spiritual intimacy is a perfect expression of such love. Our wife’s heart will sense deep love and value as we give attention to nurturing our spiritual life together. The difficult reality for most men is that we are dropping the ball big time in this important aspect of marriage, but there is a way to change all that!
Notice also that the Bible says Jesus sanctifies His bride by the “washing of water through the Word.” That is exactly how you can love your wife. By praying through the Word of God, you will be washing her with the water of the Word.
Paul calls husbands to a Jesus kind of love for their wives. Ephesians 5:28 says, “In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.”
Jesus has given us an amazing example of love for His bride, but also a model to follow. Are you ready to move toward loving your wife as Christ loves the church?
