Just Say The Word: Pray With Your Wife

DAY 2 OF 31

God’s basic description of marriage

From Genesis 2:24-25 we see the key ideas in God’s basic description of marriage are Leave, Cleave, One Flesh, Naked and Not Ashamed.

The man is to leave his family of origin to join together or “cleave” with his wife as “one flesh.” A husband and his wife are “one flesh” before God. We know about the idea of “one flesh” in marriage, but do we really understand it? God views every believer as His individual child. Yet at the same time, in the union of marriage, a husband and his wife are “one flesh” before the Lord. God’s math is different for marriage: One plus one…equals one. “Naked and not ashamed” shows us there is to be no shame between husband and wife. The marriage relationship is intimate in every dimension.

If we intend to have a Christian marriage, we cannot just declare it, but must pursue it in practice. We cannot leave God behind at the marriage altar. God must be embraced to go with us on our journey of life and marriage. God becomes the glue of our marriage as His perspective, presence, and will are brought into every dimension of our relationship and journey.

The “one flesh” union with our wife can truly be strengthened as we pray together. The purpose of the Just Say The Word plan is to show you how to pray with your wife by using the Bible as the guide for your prayers together.

We read the Bible, even study the Bible, but we can also pray the Bible. We can let the Bible show us what to pray! With a prayer path to follow, we can be more intentional and more regular than ever before in marital prayer. The content of our prayers can be as fresh as the flow of the Word of God itself, rather than praying the same prayers in the same way off the top of our heads! Praying through the Bible reveals an excellent prayer path. Gradually we will be weaving our marriage with God’s perspective, presence, and will. Just Say The Word will enhance the “one flesh” reality of your marriage as you learn to pray the Word together.
