Just Say The Word: Pray With Your Wife

DAY 6 OF 31

Just Say The Word – Marital Prayer Model

The purpose of Just Say The Word is to propose a model of prayer to enable husbands and wives to pray together more consistently and effectively. We know the Bible is the living and active word of God. Praying through the Bible becomes a practical way to bring God’s Word into your life, marriage and family.

Read

Pick a book of the Bible that you and your wife desire to pray through together. This plan will guide you through the book of Philippians to give you a practical example and growing confidence. You will read out loud a reasonable selection of verses as indicated. Perhaps you can take turns reading, but in any case, approach it in a way that is comfortable in your marriage. Proceed slowly – this is not a race!

Observe

Sit quiet to think about what you have read. Allow the Holy Spirit to show you key words, phrases, and ideas which will serve as the focus of your prayers. Briefly share your insights and thoughts with one another. I prefer to allow my wife to share first. In this way, I can intentionally learn to listen to her heart and how the Lord is speaking to her. Warning – remember this is not a teaching time for your wife; it is a season of prayer with your wife!

In the plan I have suggested Prayer Points as examples of how the text of the Bible can provide the content for our prayers together. As you will see, Prayer Points are mostly key words, phrases, and ideas which come directly from the verses.

Pray

You are on holy ground as you come together in the one-flesh spiritual intimacy of your marriage. Your prayers will be fresh as you are praying through the Word and will of God.

  • Use key words directly from the verses to guide your prayers.
  • You and your wife can participate in praying.
  • Focus on issues and concerns of today.

As you pray through the Bible with your wife, you will both find increasing comfort and confidence in your communication with one another and the Lord.

When you Miss . . . Pick Up Where You Left Off!

Don’t be discouraged when you miss. Life can be hectic and moving very fast in our generation. But now, we have tracks to follow! The Bible will keep you on path and help you retain your commitment. You can be more intentional and more regular than ever before in connecting with your wife spiritually. When you miss . . . and you will . . . just pick up where you left off!
