The Parables of JesusSample
RICH MAN AND LAZARUS
In this parable we receive two lessons from Jesus: one on the use of our wealth, and the second on our trust in the scriptures.
In the first section of this parable (vs. 19-26) we see the fate of two men is reversed when they move from life to eternity. Lazarus, who longed for even the scraps off of a table, is carried by angels to be with Abraham. The rich man, who couldn't bother with the beggar, now endures eternal torment. This parable isn't here to teach us what the afterlife is like, but to show how important it is that we use our wealth, whatever amount we have, to love and care for those around us, not to empower our every desire. Wealth, even abundant wealth, isn't bad. What we must be cautious about is our use of it. Is it for Kingdom care, or carnal indulgence?
Once the rich man realizes his mistake, his desire is to warn his brothers so they can avoid torment, but Abraham reminds him they already have a warning in the scriptures. The man is confident a miraculous sign will change their minds, but Abraham disagrees. We must avoid the same trap as the rich man, looking for a sign while overlooking the words of God right before us. Jesus performed sign after sign in His ministry, but not all believed and followed Him. We should be thankful to have as much warning (and much more) as we do in scriptures without constantly demanding more from the Creator.
