The Parables of JesusSample

The Parables of Jesus

DAY 27 OF 36

WORKERS IN THE VINEYARD
When you read this, who do you want to side with, the landowner or the workers? Do you find yourself arguing the wages shouldn't have been even, or defending the landowner for paying exactly as he said he would?

This parable works to expose our feelings regarding our efforts and God's acceptance. Ephesians 2:9 (NLT) reminds us that "salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it." Yet many are all too eager to boast of their work for God, and to demand "just" payment for such "good" work!

The landlord in this story is fair and just; he gives to each worker just as he promised, and just as he sees fit. God, in the same way, gives grace and mercy not because of our efforts but because of His love. But what kind of workers are we? Do we see our works as greater than others, and expect a greater reward? Do we see others doing less and receiving the same grace as us, and want to stomp our feet and protest?

Or do we thank our God for accepting us at all? Do we remember He owes us nothing, yet gives us everything? There isn't a limited amount of God's grace and mercy, so let us not be jealous or frustrated at the means and measure it's dolled out in to others. Instead, let us continually rejoice God chooses us!
