The Gospel of John

DAY 24 OF 30

Showing Love for you

In John 13, Jesus does something completely unexpected. As the meal begins, He gets up from the table, wraps a towel around His waist, and begins to wash His disciples’ feet. This task was typically reserved for the lowest servant in the house. But here is the King of kings, kneeling before His followers, scrubbing away the dust and dirt from their feet.

This act wasn’t just about physical cleanliness. Jesus was giving a powerful lesson on humility and love. He told them, “I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you” (John 13:15). And later, He said, “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35).

Isn’t it interesting what our world celebrates? We admire athletes with incredible ability, entrepreneurs who build successful empires, or influencers who win crowds with charm. And while there’s nothing wrong with excellence or success, Jesus redefines greatness. In His kingdom, the ones who are honored are those who love. The ones who are celebrated are those who serve.

There’s no mistaking what Jesus values. He doesn’t just applaud talent or success—He honors the heart that stoops low to lift others up. The towel and the basin are His symbols of greatness.

What if we were known not by our titles, talents, or platforms, but by our willingness to love and serve? What if we stopped striving to impress and started living to bless?

Jesus didn’t just talk about love—He showed it. In the final hours before His betrayal and crucifixion, He made it clear: Love is the mark of a true disciple.

Respond to God’s Word:

Today, follow Jesus’ example. Serve someone in a tangible way—do a chore without being asked, write a note of encouragement, bring someone a meal, or simply be present for someone who needs to talk. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you who needs to be loved today, and then act on it. Love and service are never wasted when done in Jesus’ name.
