Listening to God's Voice

DAY 6 OF 7

Hearing Through Circumstances

“But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” Genesis 50:19 (NIV)

Joseph endured many hardships in his life—abandonment, betrayal, slavery, and imprisonment. Yet, through it all, God was working behind the scenes, orchestrating every event to bring about His ultimate plan to preserve Israel and to save many lives. Sometimes, God speaks through the situations we face, teaching us, shaping our character, and revealing His love and faithfulness.

Genesis 50:15-21 reveals the complexity of Joseph’s life. After Jacob’s death, the brothers were gripped by the fear of Joseph’s potential revenge. They pleaded for his forgiveness. Joseph acknowledges their evil intention but declares, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives” (Genesis 50:19). Joseph shows us that God’s voice can often be discerned through the circumstances of our lives, even the most painful and unjust ones. While the brothers acted out of jealousy, God, in His sovereignty, wove their wicked actions into His larger plan for good. Joseph’s suffering was all part of God’s divine tapestry that ultimately led to the preservation of Israel and the saving of many lives during a time of famine.

Hearing God’s voice does not excuse evil or pretending that pain does not exist. It’s about recognizing that God is at work even in the midst of pain and challenges in life. It requires a perspective that looks beyond the hardship and seeks to understand if there is a greater purpose at play. What seems like a detour or a setback can be part of God’s intended path.

Like Joseph, we can trust that God has ultimate control and can bring good out of even the most challenging situations. Joseph’s story reminds us that God’s voice in our circumstances speaks of His faithfulness, His sovereignty, His unwavering commitment to His purposes, and His unconditional love for us, even when our immediate reality seems to contradict it. In all seasons of life, we trust that God can indeed bring beauty from ashes.

Reflection

How do we respond when we face challenging circumstances? Do we see them as obstacles or as potential opportunities for God to speak to us and work in our lives? It can be helpful to look back and see how God has used difficult times to grow us and lead us.

Prayer

Lord, help me to trust you even in the midst of difficult circumstances. Open my eyes to see how you might be speaking to me and working in my life through the challenges. Give me the strength and wisdom to learn and grow through every situation. Amen.

About this Plan

Listening to God's Voice

Have you ever asked the question, “If God still speaks today?” Or "How to tell if it’s truly Him who is speaking?" As believers, learning to listen to God’s voice is one of the most important parts of our relationship with Him. Listening to God’s voice is not about hearing an audible voice from the sky—though that can happen—but about learning to recognise how God speaks through the Scripture, the Holy Spirit, and through God’s people and circumstances. Over the next 7 days, we’ll explore stories in the Bible where God spoke to ordinary people, just like us.
