Listening to God's Voice

DAY 5 OF 7

The Promptings of the Holy Spirit

“The Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to.” Acts 16:7 (NIV)

Paul and his companions were traveling to spread the gospel, a journey significantly shaped by the prompting of the Holy Spirit. They were trying to spread the gospel in Asia, but the Holy Spirit kept them from preaching the word in the province of Asia. Subsequently, as they sought to enter Bithynia, “the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them.” It was through a vision of a man from Macedonia pleading for help that their path was finally made clear.

Paul’s encounter highlights a crucial way God speaks to us: through the inner prompting of the Holy Spirit. It wasn’t a booming voice from heaven, but an internal sense of direction, a closing of doors in one area and an opening in another. This divine guidance wasn’t based on logic or human planning alone, but on a deep connection with the Spirit of Jesus.

Hearing the Holy Spirit’s prompting requires the cultivation of a sensitive heart and mind. It involves spending time in prayer to seek the will of God and allowing the Holy Spirit to speak into our thoughts and desires. It’s about learning to discern the difference between our own desires, inclinations, and submitting to the gentle nudges of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes, like Paul and his companion, we might initially have our own plans, but the Holy Spirit redirects us towards God’s intended path.

Just as the early church relied on the Holy Spirit, we too can trust the Holy Spirit. It may not always be dramatic visions, but often a quiet inner knowing, a sense of peace about a certain direction, or a gentle unease about another. By being attentive and obedient to the prompting of the Holy Spirit, we position ourselves to be used by God in ways we might never have imagined. The Macedonian vision underscores the importance of responding in faith to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Paul and his companions may be discouraged by the closed doors, but when they submit themselves to the Holy Spirit, it ultimately led to the spread of the gospel in Europe.

Reflection

Are we sensitive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit in our lives? Do we take time to discern those gentle nudges that might be God directing our steps? Learning to distinguish the Holy Spirit’s voice from our own desires takes practice and a close relationship with God.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, I ask for your guidance in my life. Teach me to recognize your promptings and to follow your leading. Help me to discern your voice from my own thoughts and desires, so that I may walk in your will. Amen.

About this Plan

Listening to God's Voice

Have you ever asked the question, “If God still speaks today?” Or "How to tell if it’s truly Him who is speaking?" As believers, learning to listen to God’s voice is one of the most important parts of our relationship with Him. Listening to God’s voice is not about hearing an audible voice from the sky—though that can happen—but about learning to recognise how God speaks through the Scripture, the Holy Spirit, and through God’s people and circumstances. Over the next 7 days, we’ll explore stories in the Bible where God spoke to ordinary people, just like us.
