Rooted in the Word: Biblical Literacy

DAY 5 OF 5

When I first started reading the Bible, I was mainly interested in the drama of the stories. The battles, betrayals, miracles, and unexpected twists fascinated me. It was like reading an ancient action novel. I’d read about David’s victory over Goliath, Moses parting the Red Sea, and Elijah calling down fire from heaven, all while treating them as mere stories rather than life-changing truth.

I didn’t realize that God wasn’t just telling exciting stories—He was speaking to me. I saw Scripture as entertainment rather than instruction. But over time, something changed. I started noticing how God was using His Word to guide, challenge, and encourage me. A passage would stand out at just the right time, addressing something I was struggling with. A verse I had read casually before suddenly spoke directly to my heart. I began to see that the Bible wasn’t just history—it was personal.

Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” God’s Word isn’t just meant to be read—it’s meant to change us. It reveals our hearts, corrects our wrong thinking, and leads us toward God’s best.

God knows exactly how to restore us. And He does it through His Word. No matter what area of your life feels broken, uncertain, or lost, the Bible holds the wisdom and truth you need. But it won’t change you if you only read it for the “story.” You have to receive it as God’s voice speaking directly to you.

James 1:22 reminds us, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” Don’t just read Scripture—let it shape your decisions, your thoughts, and your future. When you approach the Bible expecting to hear from God, you’ll find that He has been speaking to you all along.

The Bible is impactful to us in a significant way. My prayer is that your home grows in the word of God. There's something that has helped grow our family in the word. Each week, we receive a short guide with a Bible verse, worship song, seven daily conversation questions, and a short prayer for family time. It’s helped us be intentional with our family in the word. If you’re interested in the “Leading Your Family Weekly Guide,” you can get it here: https://www.faithfamilyweekly.com/

Reflection Questions:

1. What area of your life needs transformation through God’s Word?

2. How can you become more intentional about applying Scripture daily?

3. What is one step you will take this week to deepen your relationship with God’s Word?
