Rooted in the Word: Biblical Literacy

DAY 3 OF 5

When I visited the Louvre, I was eager to see the Mona Lisa. It’s one of the most famous paintings in the world, so I expected something massive and breathtaking. But when I finally stood in front of it, I was surprised—it was much smaller than I had imagined. If I had come across it at an estate sale without knowing its worth, I would have overlooked it completely. I’m no art expert, and without the proper knowledge, I wouldn’t have recognized its true value.

That experience made me think about how easy it is to overlook what is truly valuable. Just as art experts authenticate priceless works of art, we must learn to recognize the authenticity of Scripture. The Bible isn’t just another historical book—it is the inspired Word of God, filled with fulfilled prophecies, divine wisdom, and eternal truth. Yet, many people pass it by, failing to see its true worth.

In today’s world, we are constantly bombarded with opinions, trends, and misinformation. Culture tells us what to believe, but those messages are always shifting. What is popular today will be forgotten tomorrow. But God’s Word remains unshakable. Isaiah 40:8 says, “The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever.” Unlike cultural opinions, the Bible has stood the test of time and continues to transform lives.

When we build our beliefs on Scripture rather than society’s ever-changing standards, we establish a foundation that won’t crumble. The world’s wisdom may seem appealing at first, but it lacks the eternal power and truth found in God’s Word. Just as a trained eye can spot a masterpiece, we must train our hearts to recognize the voice of God in Scripture.

Don’t overlook the Bible like I almost overlooked the Mona Lisa. It may not always seem flashy, but it holds immeasurable worth. It is the very voice of God, guiding us, strengthening us, and revealing His purpose for our lives.

Reflection Questions:

1. Have you ever overlooked the value of Scripture in your daily life?

2. How can you become more intentional about recognizing the truth and power of God’s Word?

3. What steps can you take to build your life on the firm foundation of Scripture rather than the shifting opinions of the world?
