The Mysteries of Praise

DAY 5 OF 7

Praise is Spirit

As we’ve seen in previous days, Praise is not tied to our circumstances, feelings, or limitations. True Praise is about magnifying God. But how do we Praise Him as He desires? Is it through mindlessly sung songs or by reciting memorized words?

When Christ speaks to the Samaritan woman at the well, He breaks societal norms to reveal a Profound Truth: God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must do so in Spirit and in Truth. In this simple yet transformative conversation, Jesus shifts the focus from external traditions—locations, rituals, and appearances—to the internal reality of our connection with God.

To truly Praise God, we must know Whom we Praise: the One True Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (John 17:3). We must also know why we Praise: because of His Goodness and Enduring Love (Psalm 100:5). And we must know when to Praise: at all times, in every situation (Psalm 34:1). But Christ’s conversation with the Samaritan woman focuses on the how of Praise.

True Praise flows from spirits that connect with our God who is Spirit, and hearts grounded in the Truth of His Word. It is not about reciting memorized phrases or performing outward acts; it is about a genuine relationship with God. To worship Him in Spirit, we must let His Holy Spirit guide us, teaching us all things and empowering our Praise (John 14:26). To worship Him in Truth, we must anchor our hearts in the knowledge of His Word, believing He is Sovereign, Eternal, and Good.

Praise is a posture of spirit and heart. Thankfully, Christ modeled this for us, showing us how to relate with the Father.

Reflection

What does your Praise reflect today? Is it just an outward routine, or does it flow from a Spirit-filled connection with the Living God?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for calling me to worship You in Spirit and in Truth. Teach me through Your Holy Spirit to Praise You with a heart and spirit that truly magnify You. Help me to know You more deeply and to reflect Your Truth in all that I do. Amen.

About this Plan

The Mysteries of Praise

In this 7-day devotional, Dunsin Oyekan examines the mysteries of Praise as the believer’s weapon. As you read about these Old and New Testament examples, be encouraged to wield this Spiritual Weapon in days of joy as much as in challenging moments.
