The Courage to Speak: A Journey in the Book of Esther

DAY 1 OF 3

Recently, while discussing the book of Esther with my husband, he shared a profound observation: "Esther's walk spoke to her being like Jesus, but there came a time when her words would be required."

This insight touches on a tender truth in our walk of faith. It's natural and beautiful to let our daily lives reflect our beliefs - through acts of kindness, service, and love. Many of us find comfort in this quiet expression of faith. Yet sometimes, God gently nudges us beyond our comfort zone, calling us to give voice to the convictions He's placed in our hearts.

In Esther chapter 4, we witness such a defining moment. Queen Esther, now established in the Persian court, receives urgent news from her cousin and mentor, Mordecai, through her attendants. A decree has been issued condemning the Jewish people to death. Mordecai's response in Esther 4:14 is striking:

"If you keep quiet at a time like this, deliverance and relief for the Jews will arise from some other place, but you and your relatives will die. Who knows if perhaps you were made queen for just such a time as this?"

While many focus on the latter part of this verse—"perhaps you were made queen for such a time as this"—the opening words carry even greater weight. Mordecai's bold declaration, "If you keep quiet at a time like this," embodies both conviction and responsibility.

God has given us the same conviction and responsibility in different areas of our lives. Although the call to speak up may be toward a person or principality, it must be answered.

Mordecai's courage to speak the truth and confront Esther's hesitancy became the catalyst that set historical events in motion.

My hope is that as you read this devotional, you will find the courage and boldness to answer that call.

Pause and Ponder: Today, ask yourself, Where have I chosen silence when God has called me to speak? What truth am I holding back that someone else needs to hear? Remember, your obedience in speaking could be the very thing that brings deliverance to others waiting to hear God's truth.
