The Great Commission was given to the disciples by Jesus before he ascended into heaven. They are to go and make disciples, baptizing them and teaching them. As a follower of Jesus, you are to go and make disciples. It is not a question if you want to do this or a wish that Jesus would like you to do it; it is Jesus’ last command before he left the earth. It is therefore not a question “if” Christians share the gospel. This is an inherent aspect of being a disciple and follower of Jesus. This same aspect is also seen in the parable of the seed. There was never a question, if the sower goes out to sow the seed; it was about the generosity and the time.

Yes, we are saved by faith. You are saved by faith. But as James also wrote in his letter, if you have faith, your behaviour will reflect this faith (James 2.14-26). Or Paul who argues in his letter that being a follower of Jesus means believing in your heart and confessing with your mouth (Ro 10.5-15). It is not an either or; it is both and.

This command though should not feel like a burden, like an obligation. It should come naturally out of your love for Jesus, out of your love for your neighbour. If you do not feel a burden that your friends and family get saved, ask God for it. Ask him to work on your heart. If you have a burden for others to get saved, but you are too afraid or insecure, take one step at a time. God will walk with you and give you the strength and courage you need. Ask another Christian friend or leader to help you. Do it together as a group. Find a way how you can grow in this.

If you already share the gospel within your setting, continue and find someone you can take along, like a trainee. The true fruit of an apple tree is another apple tree. Think about who you could bring alongside you and train and learn together.
