7 Days to the Joy of Empty Nest: By Jennifer Maggio

DAY 3 OF 7

Who Are You?

The Lord has a calling for your life.

What did you want to be when you were little? What did you dream of doing to change the world? How did you think you would make your mark on the earth? God put dreams inside you that may have laid dormant in the last season as you navigated dirty diapers, runny noses, sports arenas, and high school algebra. One of the most critical callings a mother fulfills is fulfilling her role as a mom. But as you close the chapter to full-time day-to-day parenting, you could also begin to flourish in a new season. If you are breathing, God isn't finished with you! Begin to pray about what God would have you do. Is He calling you to start a ministry at your church? Teach a Sunday school class or a Bible study? Start a new business? Go on the mission field? Enter into the job force or perhaps take on more duties? How might the Lord lead you to fulfill His call upon your life?

Many of us have answered to the mom role for so long that we can barely remember a time before that. And while you are indeed still a mom, you are also a prayer warrior, a teacher, an employee, a friend, and a spouse. You have many hats. In the midst of your hairiest parenting years, you may have had some of your other gifts, skills, talents, and relationships fall along the wayside. I want to caution you that as you explore what the next season is, it is time for you to ask yourself an obvious question, "Who am I?" When someone asks us about our identity, we often respond by stating our profession or occupation. We respond with things like, "I am a hairdresser. I am a mom. I am a Sunday school teacher.” But as you are on this journey of assessing the end of a season, be sure you truly begin to seek the Lord about His calling and who your true identity is in Christ alone.

Too often, as moms, we get lost in the doing, fixing, and going and forget to simply be. We forget that being called daughter of the King means we are blood-bought, and our identity is found in Christ. When we dig deeper to understand what that identity is, the authority it pays for, the rest it buys, and the joy it offers, we can then successfully move into our calling with grace and ease.

Points to Ponder:

  • Who are you? It’s likely a question that you haven’t considered in some time. Are you tempted to respond with the roles you answer to? Who are you beyond the “doing?" Make a list.
  • Find Scripture to support what you have written from the list above.

About this Plan

7 Days to the Joy of Empty Nest: By Jennifer Maggio

I began dreading an empty nest on the first day of my son's junior year. (Yep, that early.) I knew it was coming. No one had prepared me for it. Who was I, apart from being a mother? I had to rediscover myself all over again. And guess what? I did and lived to not only tell you about it but rejoice with you in this very exciting new season!
