Finding Fulfillment at Work

DAY 2 OF 4

Finding Fulfillment at Work: Part II

In 1989, ministry leader, Larry Burkett, wrote a great book called Business by the Book. When I taught Burkett’s workshop, the very first lesson began with a principle that was simple yet profound.

This principle was, “The purpose of your business is to glorify God.”

If you ask most business owners why they are in business, they will tell you to make money. Even economist Milton Friedman was famous for saying the only purpose of business is making money.

For Jesus followers, however, making money is a by-product of your purpose, not the focal point.

1 Corinthians 10:31 teaches, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

If someone asked your employees why your business exists what would they say?

Question for Reflection

  • Does the organization you work for, or lead, have a purpose greater than just making money? If so, would employees and customers know what that purpose might be?
  • What is your most lucrative product or service? How might that product or service be used to glorify God?
  • How would you feel about working for a place that was known for glorifying God?
  • What actions or influence can you lend to your organization that would bring glory to God?
