On Purpose: A Lent Devotional JourneySample
Day 5 | Work without distraction
Reflection
Over the next few weeks, we'll alternate between examining Scripture and hearing about Christians like you who are living out their God-given purpose in their everyday. This week, we’re going to examine our God-given purpose in work, paid or unpaid.
I don’t know about you, but for me, this passage hit a nerve.
Mind your own business. Stop interfering. Keep yourself to yourself.
I’m ashamed to admit it, but I can be a nosy parker, a busybody, a meddler. I’m quick to see others’ shortcomings, proffer advice without being asked, and stir up situations. But, in doing so, I get distracted from the work God’s given me to do, right where I am.
And what Paul is saying to the Thessalonians – and to us today – is that we’re to work to provide for ourselves, quietly getting on with the jobs we’ve been given to do rather than passing judgement on the lives of those around us.
For context, some of the Thessalonians had given up their day jobs. Perhaps they didn’t see the God-given purpose in manual labour, couldn’t be bothered, were happy to leech off others’ generosity or put word-based evangelism on a pedestal as the way to be fruitful for Jesus. There are Christians who hold each of these attitudes today, whether consciously or unconsciously. Perhaps you identify with one of them yourself.
But, amazingly, by striving for excellence in the small and the big, we display the transforming power of the gospel. Instead of sparking resentment and creating divisions, we can bring peace and prosperity to those around us. In doing so, we have an opportunity to win their respect, to show them something of Jesus – his radical and sacrificial love.
So, to the degree you’re able and wherever God’s placed you, use your hands – your talents, interests, and abilities – to make good work. Because, in doing so, you’re pointing to Jesus.
Every time you find yourself using your hands this week, take a moment and pray that God will bless your work.
Jesus, please help me to work without distraction and with excellence. As I do so, may I win the respect of others to the glory of your name. Amen.
