On Purpose: A Lent Devotional JourneySample
Day 10 | Philippa’s story
Reflection
At weddings, I love watching the groom turn to see his beautiful bride walking down the aisle. Whether he mouths ‘wow’, displays a wide grin, wells up, or weeps, it’s a simply magical moment.
Philippa is a bridalwear designer who uses her creativity to facilitate these joy-filled moments. She designs beaded gowns, embellished frocks, and simple shifts to help women look and feel beautiful on their wedding days. She works with diligence and care, seeing every single design as an opportunity to reflect the artistry of the Lord. He created the universe and continues to craft natural masterpieces – stunning sunrises, crystal clear skies, and fluffy white clouds. Each of these scenes proclaims the work of his hands.
It’s not always easy. It's a tough, fast-paced environment. It’s competitive – often dog-eat-dog competitive. And, what’s more, the objectification of women continues to plague the fashion industry. Women are made to feel they’re only attractive if they’re a certain weight, shape, and size.
But Philippa knows this isn’t true. Every woman is beautiful because they’re made in the image of God. She seeks to empower women to be confident in who they are, bringing out their inner beauty and showcasing their personality and character through her creative designs. By championing body-positive, sustainable bridalwear, Philippa helps shape the culture around her to be more like heaven.
What’s more, as she goes about her work, she radiates kindness and patience. With Jesus by her side, she’s supernaturally gentle with colleagues and suppliers when they’re short-tempered, pointing them to the lavish love of her Creator.
In all that she does, Philippa reflects the care and creativity of the Lord. And every day you have God-given opportunities to fulfil this purpose, too. By laying perfectly straight bricks, keeping your workspace neat and tidy, or baking a stunning cake, you’re working with God to restore the world to all that it was meant to be.
Father, help me to spark delight and craft beauty today, pointing others to you – the Creator of the universe and the giver of everlasting joy. Amen.
