Encountering Jesus

DAY 48 OF 49

DISCOVER

Let us step away from the crucifixion scene to see another example of this story. Go back 1000 years to the life of David- the shepherd boy turned soldier turned king. He was a man who loved God’s heart and was deeply loved by his people. God blessed him – and yet in his laziness and lust, he strayed from God! He committed adultery with his friend’s wife and had him killed to cover it up. This Psalm is a confessional song of David.

LEARN

Our present culture tends toward “victimization.” It's less popular to admit wrong, and few people take responsibility for their actions. Think about “apologies” you have heard/read from famous politicians, artists, athletes, pastors, etc. Their statement is often written by a public relations expert for “spin control.” Do they say they are “sorry”? Look through this psalm. Note that David refers to his guilt in 11 ways. He humbly asks God for 18 provisions in his repentance. He promises to do several things as God restores him. There is no doubting David’s repentance! His life is an excellent example for our own lives.

APPLY

We are quick to see sin and expect repentance in other people’s lives. Are we that quick with the sin in ours? We usually do not think about repentance until we already sinned, when our flesh is in full-court defensive mode. David wrote that he wanted to teach rebels about God’s mercy. Let us learn from him. Reread Psalm 51, but do it out loud, and make it personal. You may not have David’s level of sin, but you need his heart of repentance. Pray these verses over any sin in your own life.

About this Plan

Encountering Jesus

Join us as we walk through seven encounters with Jesus. Just as Jesus transformed these individuals, the narratives of your shame, fear, guilt, and failure find redemption when met by the grace bought by His death on the cross. Your response to encountering Jesus has the power to transform the darkness of your story into a picture of grace, and redemption. How will you respond when you encounter Jesus?
