Encountering JesusSample
DISCOVER
Jesus and the two criminals are led out of the city and crucified in the public execution place. He begins the six hours of dying by forgiving everyone who is killing Him. In stark contrast to that humility is the sarcastic attitude and words of people around Him. Notice who all ridicule Him – the Jewish leaders, the soldiers, those passing by, and even the two criminals.
LEARN
Why would people mock Jesus? He had always helped people in need. His miracles healed and fed thousands. He offered forgiveness, kindness, and life to the masses. They might mock because though He did good for them, He could not ultimately give them what they wanted. He was no “mighty king.” Their hearts were evil, and He was just a sad failure of a joke. Others, the religious rulers, were filled with hate and jealousy toward Him. He called out their hypocrisy in front of people and warned crowds away from them. Many mockers appeared that morning – but the joke would swiftly be on them.
APPLY
Our present culture is much like the crowd around the cross – loud, confusing, mob mentality. People are quick to use sarcasm and show disrespect toward authorities in their lives. They may treat God with mockery, and disrespect Him by pulling Him down to their level of morality. How do people you know view God? How can you help move them away from mockery of His story, his Word? Pray for them.

About this Plan
Join us as we walk through seven encounters with Jesus. Just as Jesus transformed these individuals, the narratives of your shame, fear, guilt, and failure find redemption when met by the grace bought by His death on the cross. Your response to encountering Jesus has the power to transform the darkness of your story into a picture of grace, and redemption. How will you respond when you encounter Jesus?
