Encountering Jesus

DAY 46 OF 49

DISCOVER

As the mocking of Jesus continues, one of the criminals voices a sarcasm that exhibits the attitude of those far from God. He challenges Jesus’ identity – “Aren’t you the Christ? Save yourself and us!” He no doubt is mocking, but he shows the misunderstanding people have about Jesus’ salvation. He wanted a Messiah who would be strong and give him a good life. This is somewhat understandable based on a reading of Isaiah, who prophesied the Messiah would indeed liberate people. But he only wanted the external benefits, not the internal heart change Christ was offering.

LEARN

You would think desperate people would be quick to accept saving help, but it's not always the case. This criminal wanted salvation on his terms. Several people in Jesus’ story similarly treated Him: the rich young ruler, and the hungry crowds of John. In that story, Jesus miraculously fed 5000 people after His teaching. They followed Him around the lake and expected more food. He rebuked them, saying they were missing what He was truly trying to give them. We all can be like this crowd or this criminal – we want God to give us “what we want!”

APPLY

It is easy to judge the self-centeredness of people in these stories – but it is like looking in the mirror! In our “flesh,” we all want what we want, even from God. We would like God to care for us, answer our prayers the way we want, etc. In what ways are you wanting salvation “your way”? Have you completely submitted to Jesus’ rule in every area of your life? Pray, offer your all to him.

About this Plan

Encountering Jesus

Join us as we walk through seven encounters with Jesus. Just as Jesus transformed these individuals, the narratives of your shame, fear, guilt, and failure find redemption when met by the grace bought by His death on the cross. Your response to encountering Jesus has the power to transform the darkness of your story into a picture of grace, and redemption. How will you respond when you encounter Jesus?
