God Sings Songs For The ForgottenSample
"God Sings Songs to Relieve Betrayal and Burdens"
This Psalm is a prayer from an individual who faces threats from various sources: from social enemies engaged in oppression (vv. 9-11, 23), and from a personal enemy once called “a companion” (vv.12-14, 20-21). What makes this Psalm particularly painful to read is the feeling that the writer has been betrayed in a deep way.
Betrayal of this sort leads the author to experience an intense feeling of burden. The Psalmist likens this burden to the “terrors of death” and to the raging winds of a hurricane. It seems that the writer desires only to do what we all would do in a hurricane—run away! He imagines; “Oh, that I had wings like a Dove, I would fly away and be at rest!” Sadly this writer doesn’t in fact sprout wings and fly away. Instead, like an anchor, God’s presence with him in the midst of his storm is what relieves his burden and carries him through it all.
The Psalmist calls upon the Lord and secures himself to the dock of God’s steadfast love amidst the raging storm. The only hope in such a tempest is that the Lord hears his complaints, sees those who cause him burden—one’s that do not fear God—and acts on behalf of the Psalmist to wage war against his foes. It is truly hopeful to know that we can cast down our burdens and betrayals onto the shoulders of God and he will sustain us. Enjoy the Songs of the Forgotten Album as you bring your tension to the Father, and enjoy him bringing your heart to peace.
