God Sings Songs For The Forgotten

DAY 10 OF 10

"God Sings Songs for the Forgotten"

“Are your wonders known in the darkness? In the land of forgetfulness?”

This is the question that looms in Psalm 88 and in our lives today. Through all the darkness in the world, is God’s work still magnified and glorified? We look around and see people dying, people scared, economies crashing, and tension in all forms between people, nations, and churches, and we have to ask, “can God’s wonders be known in all of this?” This is the forever question, and I won’t pretend to answer it here.

The Psalmist leaves intentional tension in this question. Though he never directly answers everything in their doubt, the writer's words of assurance in Psalm 88 clearly demonstrate that their response to this question is undoubtedly “yes!” They continue to cry to the Lord even though they feel helpless, down in the pit, in terror, and shunned by companion and foe.

This leaves us with two responses. One, we must answer the question; “is our faith strong enough to continue to cry out to God for help even when the darkness is all we see?”  Will we trust that he is good even through the fog? Second, if our answer is yes, which if we are true believers the Bible assures that we will persevere, then we must not only search hard to pray through our despair, but we must look for the treasures hidden in the black mountain through which we dig. What wonders are hidden beneath the surface? As we mine out this life with our axe of faith, what gold rests in the mountain? What gold is there to find inside of us? What gold is to be discovered about God?

Truth be told, without darkness we can know very little about light. Without hatred we can never see the glories of love and sacrifice. Without the presence of impatience and temptation, we can never see the glories of forbearance and self-control. God leaves the darkness in tact for a time only to demonstrate the absolute limits to which his beauty can reach. In everything darkness can do, God’s glory in and through his people can outlast and outdo more.

Even though we live in the land of forgetfulness, we are not forgotten. Enjoy Psalm 88 on the Songs of the Forgotten album and discover God amidst one of the hardest questions ever asked.

About this Plan

God Sings Songs For The Forgotten

Are you ever brought to sorrow over life’s sufferings? Do you feel hopeless in the face of injustice in the world? God sings songs for those seemingly forgotten. In the Psalms, two genres of song that are often overlooked are the Lament Psalms (songs of sorrow), and the Imprecatory Psalms (songs of injustice). Join this 10-Day study and allow God to bring healing and hope to you through his songs.
