It's pretty easy to be friends with people who look, talk, and think like you. There's nothing wrong with that, but there's also so much to be gained by making friends who are different from you. They can help open your eyes to new perspectives, and help you think about complex issues in ways you haven't considered. A diverse group of friends is a great way to learn more about the world, and to see the beauty in the many different kinds of people that God has made.

How do we make friends with people who are different? This doesn't always feel natural, and oftentimes it takes real effort. Sometimes our society puts up barriers between different groups of people, and the challenge for us is to know how to overcome those barriers and create real friendships that last.

In his letter to the Colossians, Paul told his readers that the key to getting to know other people starts with being kind. He said that all of our conversations with people we don't know yet should be seasoned with salt.

Think about what does salt does. It adds flavor. You put it on food to add a little something extra to every bite. That's what our conversations with people who aren't like us are supposed to be. With God's help, these conversations can lead to impactful friendships with people who we may have previously viewed "outsiders."
