Romans - Part 1: SINSample
Romans 1:11-13. Love in Action.
In verse 13, Paul explains for the first time why he wants to come to Rome – to see spiritual fruit, (probably new converts), and to impart a strengthening of faith for the believers themselves. He anticipates the visit will provide mutual help between him and the believers in Rome. It’s easy to think of the words of Jesus as we read of Paul’s desire to share some spiritual gift during his visit to Rome, “…
When someone has been given much, much will be required in return, and when someone has been entrusted with much, even more will be required.” - Luke 12:48
Paul knew he had been given much from the inexhaustible, endless treasure of God’s grace and he held himself accountable to share his spiritual wealth with others, believers, and non-believers. Picasso wrote,
“The meaning of life is to discover your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” - Picasso
All of Paul’s life and ministry flowed from this blessed purpose: to share with others what God has so richly given him. But, what is striking in this passage is that Paul sought out encouragement for himself as well. Often, it is easier to give something than it is to receive it. Receiving a blessing requires humbling ourselves and admitting that we also have needs. Paul humbly underscores that he is as dependent as each of the readers for care; he is confident that God will distribute His grace in and through each one of them, to their mutual benefit.
If this man, who had had a dramatic encounter with the Risen Christ, who had seen God use him powerfully, and who had a strong personality (Double AA!!), can admit he could use encouragement, then none of us are exempt. Paul expected to receive a blessing from his sisters and brothers in Rome, as well as give one. This is surely true among Christians…the blessings run in both directions. James Houston once said,
“Love is meaningless if it’s not love-put-in-action.” - James Houston
Today, let’s put love, God’s love, into action. by sharing a blessing with someone – a kind word, a note of encouragement, a whispered prayer, asking God’s presence to be real and felt for a troubled friend, and to be willing to receive a blessing as well!
-Norm Hudspeth
Take a moment and quiet your thoughts. Ask God to bring to mind someone in need of encouragement. Don’t stop there! Take action. Write a note, make a phone call, or drop off a coffee.
