Resilient: Powerful Hope in a Dangerous WorldSample
When you experience the presence of God, you do not remain the same.
As Peter describes how nonbelievers don’t understand the transforming power of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, he says that “they malign you.” The Greek word that is used for “malign” means to speak reproachfully or to rail at. Living as a Christian who has experienced the grace of God means experiencing an increased desire to live a godly life – but that also means experiencing judgment from our neighbors or the people we consider to be our friends.
But Peter doesn’t stop there. He continues to tell his readers that no matter what we do – whether we live in debauchery or for righteousness – it will have consequences. The reality of God’s judgment is imminent and sure, and it should spark a sense of urgency in our hearts.
We have tasted and seen the goddess of the Lord, and it is up to us to share the same love and grace that was lavished upon us. God the Father, in His wisdom and omnipotent power, knows every good and evil deed on the earth.
If our lives have truly been transformed, then it should not be something that we keep to ourselves. It should be something that we earnestly share with those who have yet to experience the love of Christ, not despite their reproach and railing, but because of the reality of the One who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
Reflection Questions
- Jude 1:10 makes a connection between destruction and not understanding the things of heaven. What are you doing to help people understand Jesus’ saving power?
- When we receive a judgmental attitude from the people around us, it’s easy to go into rebuttal with a “grumbling” attitude (James 5:9). How does the reality of eternal judgment change your heart posture towards others?
- You are set apart for the glory of God. Do you live as though God has appointed you to preach the gospel? Why or why not?
