Theology for Everybody: Romans

DAY 60 OF 365

How much information do you know about the Bible? How many sermons have you listened to? How much of the Bible have you read? How many Christian books are in your house? How many Scripture verses have you memorized? How many Bible studies have you done?

One trap of religion is the belief that the point of learning is information but not transformation. The truth is the more we know, the more we are responsible, and the more God will judge us for our failure to obey.

Unlike many subjects we study in school, the goal of Bible study is not to pass a test but to live a life. The goal is not to be merely hearers of the Word who amass information. The goal is to be doers of the Word who experience transformation.

But what does it mean to be doers of the Word? Jesus said that the goal of the Word was to love God with all our hearts (emotional life), souls (spiritual life), minds (mental life) and strength (physical life) and love our neighbors (see Mark 12:30–31). To state it simply, to be a doer of the Word is to have a healthy relationship with God and healthy relationships with others. To put it even more simply, you are not biblical unless you are also relational. Love is a relational word. Your relationship with God is sourced in love—God loves you and wants you to love Him.

Paul says the same thing in his layout of Romans. In Romans 1–11, the goal is how to have a healthy relationship with God. God made us in his image and likeness, so there is something deep within the human makeup that causes us to just want to be good people. To use the language of the Bible, righteousness or rightness is what we seek. And Paul told us in Romans chapter 1 how we can be righteous in the sight of God.

Jesus can save you from Satan, sin, death, hell, the wrath of God, and all of your bad decisions. Do you want to go to heaven? Believe in Jesus. Do you want your sin forgiven? Believe in Jesus. Do you want to get right with God? Believe in Jesus. It all comes down to one simple thing—a relationship with Jesus Christ.

About this Plan

Theology for Everybody: Romans

After Pastor Mark got saved in his college dorm room reading the book of Romans, this 365-day devotional is the culmination of more than 30 years of studying this incredible book. Chapter-by-chapter, verse-by-verse, this book digs into topics covered in the great book of Romans, such as justification, grace, predestination, legalism, deconstruction, and more.
