For the Children
A key word here is “generation.” God’s program is large and long; it encompasses all the earth and all time. God has plans that include us and our children.
The interesting thing emphasized here is the continuation of God’s program entrusted to the fathers (v. 5). Fathers have the obligation to pass to their children what God has done and said. He commanded our fathers to teach their children. And the fathers are to teach their children even though the fathers themselves have failed in their own commitment to God’s way (v. 8). This should say two things to us. First, fathers are not relieved of the responsibility to teach their children even when they have imperfectly followed God’s plan. Second, God has not given up hope on His people.
God is concerned about our generation and the next, and the next, and the next. As we praise the Lord for His great works and mighty deeds, we secure for our children the heritage of being God’s people.
