Throughout the Bible, authors use the image of trees to help us understand humanity’s relationship with God. Think about what a flourishing tree is like: Its roots supply all it needs to grow and bear fruit season after season. In the same way, God designed people to flourish when they stay rooted and connected to him. Over time, we begin to “bear fruit”--evidence–of God in our life: Our actions, thoughts, and attitudes reflect God’s image to the world.

Even though we can’t see them on the surface, the root system is the life source for a flourishing tree. Without its nourishment, the tree will fail to grow. In the same way, our lives need the life-giving power that only comes from God. When we stay connected to him, we begin to grow into the fullness of who God made us to be.

1. Jesus repeats the phrase, “remain in me,” in John 15:1-8. What are some practical ways you can remain connected to God to flourish? Look back to Psalm 1 to help you answer.
2. Do you “delight” in God’s Word? It doesn’t always come naturally to us, but as we read the Bible, God will use it to shape us. Ask God to help you desire to read the Bible, enjoy it, and experience its life-changing power.
