Advent in Exile - Christmas Longing With Isaiah

DAY 23 OF 35

The outline of the Isaiah passage has a call to proclaim comfort to Jerusalem and to announce the glorious coming of God. The people of Israel had been in exile in Babylon and would return to the Holy Land - how thrilling! After so much judgment and pain, this was truly good news! The prophet shares that Jerusalem has received double for their sin - it is time.

There is an eschatological ring to this passage, but the Gospels connect these verses to John the Baptist as the one who would prepare the way for Jesus. John would tie these verses of glory to the Lamb of God, the Word made flesh. He would not come in secret but people witnessed the Lord in their cities, along their roads, and at the dinner table.

The amazing background story of the conception of John the Baptist reminds us of God’s perfect timing. Just when it seemed life would know no happy little feet for Zechariah and Elizabeth, John showed up! When God says it’s time, it’s time! And John did his job preparing the way for Jesus!
